Fuel pump whine 200 1992

Guys,

Planning a big 5000mi Europe round trip this summer and started to focus a bit more on technical state of old trusty 92 240 with 170kmiles.

When the tank level drops to less than 1/4 I can clearly hear a whining noise from the back. Clearly we are talking tank fitted transfer pump. Whining goes up and down a bit (together with slightly unsteady idle) but does not seem to effect the power of the car. It's kinda handy as it tells me its time to fill up.

Replaced main fuel filter, no change, but never opened up for filter sock check.

Anyhow, are we talking replacing to ensure proper operation or is this something that keeps on going for years like with so many 240 quirks?

Have not checked pump amps, what should it be reading?

Your experiences are much appriciated

Fuel pump whine - got some more 200 1992

Checked it out and measured the current:

    Pre-pump 1.4 Amps
    Main pump 5.4 Amps

AND the whine does not go away when I pull the fuse on the Pre-pump. Basically the whine comes from the main pump when the level gets low regardless of pre-pump running. Sounds more like the pre-pump has a pumping problem.

Will pull the lot out over the weekend.

    Thanks,

    Jorn

keep the tank above 1/2 until you change/check the intake pump. You're stressing the main pump otherwise.

If you are planning a long trip, I would attend to it. The whole in-tank pump unit is only $90 US from FCP Groton. If the in-tank pump is not working right you can wreck the main pump.

I just fixed mine for the first time last month. My problem was broken wires.

    Check the FAQs on this.

I'd have to agree with Mark and get it attended to. You described same symptoms I had a few years back and I lived with it for awhile until the pre-pump died. You won't be happy if it dies and you don't have easy access to a Volvo mechanic. It's been 5 years since with no problems. Pretty cheap fix.
