740 Wagon Electric Sunroof Problem 700

OK, having more or less conquered the exterior lighting, my next task is the electric sunroof. It only opens to the vent position. I had the headliner piece pushed back today and was trying to get the roof to open fully, but it would not go. The motor runs for a moment, it moves back a bit, and then stops. I cannot tell what needs to be adjusted. I have lubricated everything I could find and I am fresh out of ideas. Also, how in the world do I attach the headliner panel to the rear clips on the sunroof? I can barely reach in there.

TIA

SD

If you remove the cover plate just above the inside rearview mirror on the ceiling in front of the sunroof, you will expose a large screw/nut that will operate you sunroof in absence of a working motor. I am thinking you might try the screw to see if the sunroof will operate manually. If it does, then you know the problem is in the motor, wiring, etc. My only hesitation might be that you would somehow damage the motor or cables by doing this. I think you would be okay, but someone else might offer more information. My 15 year old sunroof motor has never failed me, so I have never had the need to do this.

I would remove the power sunroof switch and clean the contacts on it and the harness in the dash. Usually works for me.

See the FAQ for full instructions. Your problem is either switch, track adjustment, or motor microswitch.

If you do find out it's a motor problem a manual crank assembly will fit just fine. I did this to mine while I have the motor out for a microswitch repair. I found the crank assembly and cover plate at a salvage yard for a couple of dollars.

Good luck,
