Check engine light 240 200 1989

Need some help. My 89' 240 been showing the check engine light. This has been on going a month. The code sez too rich a mixture. Changed the Ox sensor,
cleaned the throttle body (this cured it a while back) Changed fuel filter etc.
When the check engine light comes on the engine runs ok, but idle is about 1000
rpm. Remove the battery cable to reset the computer and the engine runs rough
too rich like the choke is on. Checked the air mass and resistance looks ok,
visual shows the wire still there. This is driving me nuts anybody had a similar problem? All suggestions appreciated. Thanks

Good suggestions in the other posts.

A bad coolant temperature sensor can also cause rich running. When it goes bad (open circuit), the ECU thinks the temp is always -40 degrees and dumps extra fuel in.

The Bentley manual has the full diagnostic procedure for the fuel injection system. The book and a volt/ohm meter will help you find the problem.

My 89 240 had the same problem. Sorry to say but it turned out to be the ECM (computer). Was driving from Florida to South Carolina a 400 mile trip. I had to fill up 4 times. The ECM was literally dumping fuel into the cylinders. Hope its not the same for you but just in case, I bought a backup ECM for my '88 240 for 50 bucks from a junkyard.
