well, my lock went to crap and fell apart, but then i went to the junkyard and got one there. It took like less than 5 min. to install. Only downside, I do not have a key for it anymore, since it's from yard. I just live knowing I can't lock my glovebox anymore, but I never did. I saw the lock in the ipd cat. and i couldn't believe they want like $50 for it!!! Just steal one from the junkyard :-) If I happen to see a lock with the key in it, I'll keep it handy for ya... take care

I'd have to agree that it was pure luck going on there :-). i found a set of keys that went to a Volvo in the junkyard and kept them JUST in case one time. Problem was that it was an '89 240 and I'm not sure that the lock would fit an '85 or older. The locks on the newer ones seem little bit bigger. This yard I go to will charge you for bolts (can you believe that?). I just kinda dump them in w/ the tools while I'm at it :-). The buck I pay to get in there should cover that. Take care!

I just happen to have the IPD catalog handy and they have the lock and two keys for $48.00. You know about IPD right? www.ipdusa.com. (I don't work for them.)

Lessee if I can figure out what you need. First, I don't know who Mam is, but that may not be important.

You have a hole in the glove box. I assume the hole is where the lock is supposed to go?

Yes, junk yards don't usually have keys.

With the 1986 model the ignition key and the valet key would open the glove box and trunk. Prior years need a separate key. If you aren't sure about your can, check your owner's manual. www.volvocars.com/lit or call 1-800-VOLVO and order a manual if you don't now have one.

If you find a lock in the junkyard that will fit the door, write down the model year of the donor car and the VIN (be sure to get all 17 digits). Take the lock and VIN to a dealer, and they can cut you a key that will work IF the PO did not change the box lock. You must pay them for the key blank and labor, even if the key won't work.

Failing that, take the lock, and the bum key, to a good locksmith and he can make you a key that will work. BTDT on all the above.

Plan C is to attach velcro strips to the upper edge of the glove box frame and door, and pry open the door when you need to. Not even near the "stock" look, but it works.

Good Luck,

Bob

No life... 200 1985

Hey I seem to remember spending a thrilling evening swapping the pins from a broken glovebox lock into a junkyard replacement. I can't recall that much of it, trying to preserve brittle pot metal and keep track of tiny springs. Either it is a false memory or it was successful, as all the gloveboxes work. Wait a minute, why would I lock a glovebox??

Nice to know the alternatives cost lots of money! Guess I'll have to take some pictures next time??

Yipes. Where are you going that the dealer will charge you for keys that don't work and charge you for labor?

If I need a key cut for a 240, I walk down to the dealer.. $4.50 later I've got an ignition key (not a nice Volvo blank, but still it's better than nothing). They can't manage to keep the trunk key blanks in stock for whatever reason.

Both the dealer, and the locksmith that my friend dealt with (he needed an ignition key for his 88 760T) haven't charged us for keys that don't work. I can't imagine that any locksmith worth his salt would charge you for such keys (now the dealer.. that I can understand).

If you're looking for a lock for a 240 or 740 (the later 760/960s used some insane type of inverted looking key thing), just go to the dealer and ask for the key code (“Oh, I just want to write this down in the owner's manual”) and take the code over to a decent locksmith and have them cut it for you. I don't think this works with a special/diplomat/tourist ordered car (at least my wagon's VIN doesn't seem to be in VADIS).

Oh, and I forgot to add, if your dealer is uncooperative.. take the lock to the locksmith. It should be trivial for them to cut a key from the lock. The only problem you might run into is when you want to use the key from the glove box lock elsewhere. On the later x6x cars (taking my friend's car as an example here) the door locks used n number of pins in the lock, the ignition n+3.
