Faulty Gauge or Broken Thermostat? 200 1986

Hey! I'm just going to go ahead and apologize for this post.......I can't figure this out: yesterday I drove 10 blocks to get gas and my temp gauge was above the half way point, the highest it has registered in the eight months I've had the car. I had to drive to San Antonio, which is about 70 miles away, anyway I drove 70 m.p.h. down the freeway and the temp gauge was actually BELOW the halfway point. I make this trip about once a week and it's the same thing, I don't think my car is running that cool. I've got to figure this out because it's summer and in Texas it's just going to get worse and I don't want to deal with a exploded car. I've read through both the Bently and the Haynes and still can't figure it out. Should I just start replacing both the gauge and the thermostat and see where that leads? The thermostat replacement looks pretty straight forward, the gauge a little more complicated.
And always, thanks......
