HAve a Volvo HA-3141 2x40W amp to install 200 1988

in the wifemobile. She likes 4 speakers, and the CR-4123 head unit does fine, as to High Fidelity - nothing exotic needed.

Needs the amp to power rear speakers. Got in on eBay, under $30. The wires are all there, and I can maybe figure out what goes where, but if you already know what goes where, it would help me a bunch.

Here's what wires are there, and my guess as to where they go.

Fat black cord with DIN connector ------------------------ into head unit jack.

Heavy gauge black with insulated male spade connector ----------- into a ground?

Heavy gauge yellow with insulated male round connector ---------- into the head unit power on? or to a constant power and the "on" signal comes elsewhere.

Six place connector, five are used with light gauge wires.

Pair #1 -- Black and white/black stripe --- to one rear speaker??

Pair #2 -- Black and uellow/black stripe ---- to the other rear speaker??

Single wire ---- just plain black --- to ground on the head unit frame?? Maybe the "on" signal??

The unit came out of a 1989 780.

The question marks are my guesses. Any help will be appreciated!!

Thanks in advance,

Bob

    HAve a Volvo HA-3141 2x40W amp to install 200 1988

I've got one of those in my 240. Sounds pretty good. Have the 9 pin plugs (a male and female) been cut off the wires? Normally you unplug the radio at its 9 pin plug, plug the power amp into the car side, and the radio then plugs into the male plug on the power amp. Going from memory. The big yellow wire is unswitched power. Go to the fuse box with that. The power on signal comes from the radio in the din wire. The big black wire goes to chassis ground. The small black wire If I remember right goes to the radio chasis. There is usually a lug on it for attaching it to the screw on the back of the radio. This is because the 9 pin plug for the radio on the power amp harness does not have the ground wire. I am guessing this is because the stock radios usually have the speaker grounds spliced into the main ground. Most power amps are damaged by this so the amp harness bypasses the radio ground wire. This would not apply with a 2 channel rear amp, but that amp was usually used with a 2 by 25 front speaker amp. I bet the guy that sold that to you sold the other one separately. So the little black wire replaces the stock ground wire. You guessed right on the speaker wires.

One more thing about that HA-3141 2x40W amp.... 200 1988

Where is the best place to mount the thing? The radio is top mounted, the lower box is filled with things that are frequestly used and fit nicely - so I'm thinking "hang it on the PS firewall?" Put in a new bracket and hang it on that?

Jessie - since you have/had one in a 240, where was it?

      Thanks again,

      Bob

That was a problem, and I never found a good place for it. I tried the firewall on the passenger side, but there is not much room on my 89(seems to me the ezk unit is there) , and the amp is pretty bulky (I also had to fit the 25 watt amp in). I ended up putting it above the glovebox, jammed in between the vent pipe and the bottom of the dash. I made a little bracket to bolt it to the support for the vent system. It would be easiest to mount in under the back deck with the speakers (sedan) but you have probably already noticed the DIN cable is not long enough. I can take a picture of where mine is if you want. I'd have to email it to you, since I have not figured out how to post pics on this site. I can't get my camera to take low enough resolution shots to be accepted on this site.

I've only seen one of these factory mounted, but it wasn't a 2x40, I think it was a 2x15. I took it apart to make a drawing but I felt it might not be helpful to post the notes in case Bob's was different. It definitely was found above the glove box. Seem to recall a sheet metal bracket keeping it out of windshield wiper trouble.

Hey Art how do you post pics? What format do you take the picture in? The smallest pic my camera will take is 64k. Does yours take a lower res one than that or do you convert it somehow? If you could describe the process it would be great. I have never seen instructions anywhere on how to do this. I only know how to email pics to people. The 2 by 15W amp you are talking about is less than a third of the size of the 2 by 40 he is using. Its one of the old style amps that has the big capacitors, and a large aluminum heat sink around it, and its heavy. From what I have seen the wiring is pretty standard and logical. The only thing that is difficult to figure out is the din plug wires if you want to attach non-Volvo stuff. I can't even get the 6 pin din plug anywhere to make an adapter. I end up replacing it with RCA plugs.

              Jessie,
I had no idea the amp would be that large. No wonder it is tough trying to stash it.

As for the camera image size, I leave them large and use the 6-year old computer to re-size and compress for folks like me with dialup connections. Wife.mil gets rather irritated at running out of disk space every other day. I sent you an email with a rather large attachment that has some details.

      Jessie -

Your answer is exactly what I am looking for. Now I can wire it up to work, and not worry that I will fry something in there. Amps I have mever worked with.

Since the amp came from a 780, there likely was no 9-pin connector. All the wires on the amp have their terminals attached. The 6-pin one (only 5 used) hase the little flat spades in there, I suppose that's the more modern style.

Now I have to figure out a way to learn which pair of speaker connections go to the right and to the left speaker.

      Thanks a ton,

      Bob
