TEMPERATURE! 200

the temp on my '93 240 has just started to almost redline when I first start it...then she comes back down to normal operating temp. The problem only occurs when I first start the car when she hasn't been run in a few hours?
Is this a bad thermostate?

you may also consider the possibility of your fan clutch going bad..i had similar experience and after replacing EVERYTHING else, someone asked me to open the hood. They checked the fan clutch. With the ignition off and the engine hot, the fan was able to spin freely. I am replacing the clutch this weekend. $80 at auto zone with lifetime warranty. made in china, don't know if it can transmit SARS.

As noted, check coolant level both hot and cold. DO NOT open your cap when hot.

A new thermostat is only $11 or so and comes with a gasket. Took me 15 minutes to change mine. FOund 1 of the 3 I did lately had a broken piece inside, not closing properly.

It's cheap enough that it's not worth trying to test one or fiddle around with it.

    could be a lazy/binding T-stat.
Also check your fluid level. If it's low it could cause an air pocket up top by the T-stat.
Tomorrow morn. when the temp climbs, grab the upper radiator hose and see if it's cold. If it is then your T-stat is failing OR you have this air pocket due to low fluid level.

    Hello,

Sounds like you need a new temp sensor. It's about 1/3 the way back under the intake manifold. I think it's a yellow wire that comes out of it. It's always a good idea to flush out the system, replace the coolant with new stuff and change your thermostat if you don't remember the last time it was done... summer is coming. Normal operating temp should be slightly below half on the dashboard indicator.

    Happy Bricking!!!
