Can anyone tell me how to use an old Craftsman Advance Timing Light? 200 1983

I am trying to check/set the timing on my 83 240 with a B23F engine. I have borrowed an old Craftsman Advance type timing light, without an instruction manual. The unit appears to fuction normally. I checked the timing and found that with the dial on the gun set to 12 degrees, the crank was showing 5 degrees. Apparently it should be 12, do I set the gun to 0 and adjust the distributor to 12 degrees, or set the gun to 0 and adjust to 12...? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you for your time,
Seth Johnson

use the zero setting and set it to the marks on the engine. the advance dial on the light is there to check total advance, so if you want 30 degrees total at 3500 rpms then you set it to 30 and rev the motor and make sure its at the zero mark on your pulley.

if it's like the one I had you can set the gun to zero degrees and use the timing indicators on the crank. Or you can set the gun to the desired degree of timing you want and look for TDC on the crank mark.

wich is more acurate. To set to zero,or set and look. I never had a (advance) timinglight or does it not matter. As my pops just sent me one. THANKS

I would set the gun to zero and use the timing marks on the timing belt cover. If the gun is that old, I'm not sure how far I'd trust it's adjustment. Everybody else uses the marks on the motor, so you know they're reliable.
