AMM 200 1991

Hi Guys

The check engine light came on while driving home. The code reads 121 - AMM. The car also started to hesitate on acceleration and has no power. I replaced the AMM about 4 yrs ago (~65,000 miles ago). Is it time for a new one? The guy who originally replaced it, charged ~$350. Can I get an AMM and install it myself ? - I'm a very, very poor grad. Student - If so, where can I get the cheapest, etc?

As always - thanks for the help!!!

    Molly-
I agree with Tom 100% - if you can find a used one, either at a junkyard or Ebay, for instance, grab it. You do need to match up the last 3 numbers. And as you know, the going price for a new one is $300+. Avoid "rebuilts"- I've never had any luck with them.
The connector to the AMM is a trouble spot, so make sure the contacts are OK or have someone check them out carefully under a strong light to make sure they aren't pushed back or otherwise screwed up. This can definitely set a check engine light.
Last, check the air flap in the bottom of the air cleaner box. This is something you can get at yourself- make sure it's not stuck open. This would allow hot air from the foil hose to get into the intake all the time. This will kill an AMM. If it's stuck open even when it's hot, replace it or block off the pipe. Removing the foil hose would help too, but isn't legal in some states as it's needed to pass the "visual" part of the emissions test.

    Hi Molly,

Well it depends on what the last few numbers stamped on your AMM indicate. There should be a Bosch number clearly stamped on the AMM... if the last few numbers are 016 you are in luck, a new one costs "only" $185 at the internet advertisers' sites.

But if you have the one ending in 001 the amount is $350 for whatever reason, I can't fathom.

However, I have been lucky in finding a few at the local pick-n-pulls for about $25 each and they seem to work fine. Grab an extra one for a backup, they are easy to remove. Screwdriver is all you should need.

But before you do anything else, first try cleaning the contacts with contact cleaner and reseating the connector. A small amount of corrosion can build up over the years and increase the resistance of the connection. Cleaning and reseating will often clear it up and you may be fine.

    Hope that helps!

    Regards,

    TomD
