Cruise add and starter problems 200 1981

The frustration factor is getting higher...Any tips on the best method to get a 19mm socket on the upper bolt of the starter? I have a universal joint and 36" worth of extensions, but I can't seem to get the socket on the bolt. Also, I am trying to add cruise control onto the DL, but noticed that there don't seem to be any mount points in the firewall for the vacuum servo. Is that common, and if so, can I just drill a couple of mounting holes?

Thanks,
Jeff

I've used a box end wrench that is slightly angled. Slipped it between the firewall and starter and over the nut. As the wrench is flush against the firewall, I've hooked the open end with a long screwdriver and tapped the screwdriver handle with a hammer.

At least I think that's what I did. I don't have a 19mm wrench but if 3/4" is equivalent then that's probably what I did.

Cruise add and starter problems 200 1981

Jeff:

The cruise controls that I have seen on 240's in the junkyards have the servo mounted under the dash near the accelerator pedal.

I have a DL also that I would like to install a cc on.

I did have a 79 model that had aftermarket cruise control (I think it was made by Dana Corp.) that was mounted under the hood and the servo was screwed to the strut tower.
It was attached to the throttle in a hap-hazard manner that seemed unsafe.
When engaged it seemed to "hunt" for the set speed and that made it undesireable to use.

Good luck.

I have a factory cruise and the servo is mounted about 1/2 under the wiper motor. It is attached to the firewall with two bolts with about a 12mm head. Dana corp, which made the original unit was sold the cruse div. to Rostra around 1990. Factory parts are not Aval. except what is left at dealers. If you are using a factory set up, purchase the green Volvo electrical & Cruise manuals. Also when the servo unit shorted out, it also in most cases took the computer with it. I brought my cruise back to life and it now works well. Cost me a pretty penny at the pick & pull. If I had it to do over, I would get a Rostra unit and bypass the old technology. Any more questions , just holler. It took me several weeks to get my system operational.

Eck,

Thanks for the offer! My question centers on mounting the vacuum servo. I have some digital pix that show the mounting as you describe. However, on our brick, there are no holes for the bolts. Can I just basically use the servo bracket as a template and drill into the firewall in the approximate location? It is the Dana unit, complete in all respects. Do the green books also show location for a grommet in the firewall to pass the wiring through to the computer? That would be the only piece that I am potentially missing.

Thanks,
Jeff

I will look at the books tonight and get back to you tomorrow. I looked on my car , and the hole for the wires and vaccuum hose to the pedal is in line with the wiper motor where it connects to the gearbox. My hole is filled up with putty ( duct seal ? ) and not a rubber grommet. I would use the bracket holes and use self threading bolts. It may be what is in mine as I don't remember. The cable from the servo to the double throttle pulley is changeable. The pick & pull unit I got as a replacement was longer than original, so I swapped in the old cable. The green electrical book has some nice wiring drawings. The cruise book has a lot of info and troubleshooting. I needed both books to fix my car. They cost around $40. from Volvo. I was lost without them.

That sounds like the system on my 81 GLT. Mine still works, somehow. I did notice there's three potentiometers on the cruise computer that are adjustable to (possibly) prevent "hunting" I've got the 1981 owners manual for that cruise and I think it has instructions for adjusting them, in case anyone's interested.
