Broken horn requires steering wheel replacement? 900 1992

Hi,

The horn on my 92 940T stopped working recently. A quick check of the fuse and basic wiring indicates no fault. Since I was due for an oil change at my dealer, I decided to ask them to investigate it.

Their diagnose: bad contacts in the horn buttons on the steering wheel.

The kicker: there's no serviceable part available other than a complete steering wheel.

The price: CAD492/USD340

It doesn't sound right that there's no other way to repair this rather small fault. But for the fact that there's ABS, I would try to disassemble the wheel myself to take a look around. (Does anyone have instructions on how to take the steering wheel out safely?)

I've already looked into other sources for the wheel. Groton doesn't carry it. I've sent a request-for-quote to Borton. My dealer has a 20% off sale coming up in two weeks which would be my last resort. Thanks for any comments.

George

Hey George, The horn in my 1989 740 with air bag would not work, so I took it apart and checked the clear plastic contact ring for continuity. The best precaution you can take when working with the air bags,is to dissconnect the battery. Then disconect the yellow connector to the left of the stearing column under the cover panel. Remove the two, or four bolts that secure the air bag to stearing wheel, then ground yourself and disconnect the white connector that goes into the air bag. Once you have that done , remove nut that holds stearing wheel on, then pull off stearing wheel. Take the covers off top and bottom, make sure all wires are disconnected and remove the clear plasic clock spring. That unit has the contacts for your air bag and your horn. After installing new clock spring, grease the contact point on the stearing wheel with a good molly lube, don't connect anything until you put the stearing wheel on, reassemble the rest of the column, install air bag, connect the yellow conn., then reconnect your battery. you will find that your horn will work. Good luck. Sped.

I haven't heard of more than an occasional problem with these- I'd expect a good used wheel is available through most junkyards. Possibly a specialty junkyard like Erie Volvo in upstate NY.
SInce you don't need an airbag, I'm sure one could be found much more cheaply.

One of the horn buttons on my wife's 940 quit working years ago - I pulled the plastic button out of its case (on the wheel), and basically 'fabricated' a quick fix that has worked ever since. Basically, the when you press the button, a plastic 'shaft' that attaches to the button activates the contact. I basically had to rig an extension to this shaft, as it had bent/broken over time. I'm sure your contacts are still good. Just might take a good old backyard engineering. Good luck - you don't need a wheel.

You can service the little switches if you use a small flat blade screwdriver and gently push in and lift up on the switch. The area to insert the screwdriver is in the slot between the switch and the steering wheel. In my experience, the contacts can be cleaned and adjusted and made to work again. I would DC the battery first before messing around that explosive issur called an air bag. Also, used parts are available. New is not always required.

      Hi Dick,

Thanks for the suggestion. I have some reservation about the diagnose because both buttons died at the same time. To me, it doesn't seem like the individual contacts on the buttons died (simultaneously) but a problem with the wiring/circuitry linking the buttons to the horns.

Do you know how to disassemble the steering wheel? From a brief examination, I only found two screw-holes on the back of the wheel at roughly 3 and 9 o-clock.

Those couple of screws on the back side must hold the air bag. From there on you can get to the nut holding the steeing wheel on. The Volvo green manual will most likely help that situation because there are connections for both the air bag and horn. You could take off the air bag and see if anything looks suspect. Have not removed an air bag, so am out of my league there.

        Good luck,

        dick
