Is this the AMM only? (740 GL-1987) 700 1987

Hi everybody! I recently started noticing a significant loss of power on my 1987 Volvo 740 GL. Moreover, it's misfiring when cold, especially if I don't warm up the engine for at least 10 min.: sometimes I can even hear like a small gunshot from the driver side. When up the hill (or under load) the RPMs slow dramatically, and the engine gets really hot (without warning lights)! I went to the dealer and spent 80$ to find out that it's probably the AMM (air flow meter, or air mass meter), combined with a faulty fuel pump. I know that this AMM costs usually something around 200$. Could anyone tell me if experienced the same problem and if replacing the AMM (and eventually the fuel pump)will resolve it? Or mybe I should consider replacing other parts as well, like the FPR (fuel pressure regulator) or else. THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your help.

Lis

Knock sensor can cause this problem also. Disconnect and see if it runs the same.(located below/between #1 and 2 intake manifold, temp sensor is next to it and threads into block , knock sensor is flat against block. ) If it does then replace the knock sensor. (retards timing)

Also, did you try setting the AMM at idle to specs per FAQ? If it will set at idle I don't think this is your problem. As for the faulty fuel pump, did they actually test the pressure? Involves adding a scrader valve to attach gauge at fuel rail. Fuel pumps seem to be a common replacement item that doesn't solve peoples problems. Just search this board and you will read of numerous fuel pump changes that were just replaceing parts for the hell of it hoping that it solves problem which they didn't.

If your interested, the co(amm)/IAC test pigtails on your car are located just forward of the water resevoir, two wires in one connector. A dwell/tach meter works well for this. The adjustment range to get meter to bounce from one side to the other is VERY narrow.

I had problems exactly like this, except for the getting hot part, i replaced everything before i had even thought about replacing the air mass, even the fuel pump, it did turn out to be the air mass, i would replace the air mass before you replace your fuel pump with the symptoms you have its more likly to be that rather then the fuel pump. of course if you were to get under there and mess around trying to figure out if you think it is that or not that also would be a good idea, thats what i did to find my amm was bad, i unplugged it with the car on waited for the engine to change, once that happen i plugged it back in expecting it to go to where it was, nope it did all crazy stuff, as soon as i replaced it it worked perfectly.

Thanks for this first fast reply. I will definetly change it this week: do you think is better to by a cheaper aftermarket or maybe I should consider a new one, as I said around 250$?

If you're still looking for one.. I've got a used (007) AMM for sale. $65 plus shipping. Tested, and it works. Replace the airbox thermostat while your in there just in case. If the thermostat has failed it may fry your replacement AMM in short order.

Whether you want a new one or not is, IMO, more a matter of budget than anything else.

E-mail me off the board if you're interested.

Hi Alex. Thanbks for replying to my message. I am certainly interested in buying the 007 AMM, it's a good price if you are saying it's good. I usually trust people here on the Brickboard, just tell me how to get in touch and discuss the payment and shipment and all. I am home now, you may send a e-mail message as well (turogirg@hotmail.com).

          All the best

Did anyone try cleaning the connectors on the AMM?

If you get a new one, make sure you replace the airbox thermostat. Continuous hot air could've cooked yur AMM.

Hi Paul! Thanks for replying. Alex also said it's good to replace the thermostat in the box. I'll certainly do it. I am now waiting for a message from him since he said he has a tested 007 AMM just for 65$. I doubt I may find any cheaper after market one.

          All my best from Colorado.

I know on mine i had and aftermarket on there, didnt look to old and it took a crap, the worst part was figureing out exactly which model number was on there, i think i had to try 3 different air mass meters before i actually found the right one 016 yours id assume is probly 007 but dont quote me on that one. id buy a bosch one youll get decent life out of it. you can check with my parts guy at 1-800-449-0114 tell him jason told you to call he might be able to get a better price on it, though im not sure i know on mine it was almost $150 cheaper then anywhere else.
