Power Steering Leak 200

Dear Brickboarders,

My '86 240 w/240K miles has developed a nasty leak in the power steering rack at the seal where the shaft comes down from the steering wheel and mates with the steering rack.

I may have to replace the rack, and thanks to your previous posts in the archives, I think I can find a replacement reman rack for about $200 or so.

But, I'm asking your help: is there a replacement seal available that I could replace myself for a lot less money or is this just futile and I should just bite the bullet and replace the rack?

Thanks in advance for your kind help.

Regards,

TomD

    Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

I think I'll get a replacement on order. I don't really want to go used only to fight this battle again down the road...

    Regards,

I had to replace the power steering rack at both my cars, and apparently all Volvo racks have a tendency to leak after a while, cause I had a rough time trying to find a non-leaky one at the junkyard. Generally, unless you find a very good workshop, the racks cannot be repaired and anyhow the repair costs more than it's worth it. My first rack costed me about 300 USD (it was 5 years ago). It was used !!! but good. The one that I replaced this year on my 1991 245 costed me only 100... I guess the older they become, the cheaper the parts... Look for the racks that don't have any oil residues at the seals or around them. If you have only the slightest doubt DON'T BUY IT. Even if it proves later to be engine oil. The cost of the replacement if you have to do it twice (plus the cost of the realignment of the wheels - which by the way is mandatory after a steering rack replacement if you don't want to kill the tyres) is way higher than waiting a little more with a leaky steering rack until you find a good part.

try some powersteering fluid with something to stop leaks. I had a leak and I bought some prestone stop leak steering fluid and it worked. your leak may be too big but it's worth trying.
