What you need is not what is required. Sanity!

Having done this twice, an engine hoist is strongly recomended. DISCONNECT THE BATTERY. Front of car on ramps is sufficient. BLOCK the rear wheels since the tranny must be in neutral for a part of this process.

Remove the top radiator hose or replace the radiator after you've broke the neck. I saw the hose stretching and stopped before I broke the neck during the first learning experience. This WAS NOT in the Green Volvo Manual I was using.

Support engine without lifting. Release alternator. (Manual says AC but the alternator side is easier. Release both engine mounts. Lift engine then remove both engine mounts. Remove pan bolts.

Now for the hard part. This is the most tricky since it is the hardest to describe. Drop pan straight down about 1/2 inch: Look inside and rotate crankshaft so journals are as clear of the pan as you can get them.

Rotate pan 90 degrees with the back of the pan going toward the alternator. You may have to lift engine a little more so the back of the pan will clear the cross member and the journals. The pan will drop straight down when it is parallel to and in front of the cross member.

First time took me three hours without hoist using a support across the wheel towers. Second time with hoist was 1/2 hour.

I did it once and would not like to do it again. It's almost impossible.
I undid the motor mounts and raised up the engine as high as it would go.
Then I undid the pan and wiggled it out. It's sort of like one of those puzzels that can drive you crazy. tilt this way then that way, repeat until you find the right combo.
You might find it easier dropping the front crossmember a bit.
