960 transmission cooler 900

I have been thinking about putting a transmission cooler in my 95 960, and wanted a bit of feedback. Under what circumtances should I consider one. I may be towing a trailer soon, but is it generally a good idea or more trouble? What installation tips should be observed?

      torrec57,

Is that a Volvo OEM trans cooler kit? It looks like it was made for the car?

Did you cut the metal cooler lines and then bend them into a better position to accept the routing of the rubber hoses?

      Thanks, DEWFPO

B&M cooler the Volvo one is very small, I made the brakets.
I cut the metal pipes no bent and used 3/8 ruber hose.
I can send more pics for you if like, and part no. from B&M.

Thanks for the pictures, that makes things much clearer. I am interested in the part no. of the b&M cooler as well. Please post it when you get a chance.

Oil coolers for the 960's are a good idea. It extends the life of the oil and the transmission. Volvo has a kit for this and it inclides a small oil cooler which fits behind the passenger side bumper cutout. There is also a new pipe which replaces the upper trans cooler pipe as well as some other hoses to connect the oil cooler to the new pipe and the radiator.

You might also get a transmission flush at your local repair place.

I highly recommend using Synthetic ATF in these transmisions, especially if you are going to tow (even with a cooler).

I have heard that Amsoil id the brand of choice for the transmission, and that it should be professionally suctioned and flushed to remove all the old fluid. I have heard that the synthetics may be so thin, they lead to leaks. What of this and the 960 transmission?

          Volvo Guy,

When it comes to Synthetic ATF (in this case Dexron III/IV), Mobil 1, Amsoil, RedLine, Royal Purple, etc... will all give you great performance.

Synthetic motor oil and Syn. ATF are very different in their properties. Specs for ATF such as Dexron III for example are VERY specific about vicosities and friction properties. By contrast, motor oils have viscosity ranges and some oils are higher/lower in than range than others.

ATF, can't be. The viscosities can't be too thin or they wouldn't meet the ATF spec's and the transmission wouldn't function properly. What you are buying with the synthetic ATF is much, much better heat stabilty and oxidation characteristics, etc.... Something very desirable in a transmission.

They will not 'cause' a leak, they are fully compatible with 'regular' ATF and can be mixed in any quantity. Hence, they do not need to be profesionally flushed before being used.

You can, howerver have it flushed or flush it yourself (it only takes about a hour or so) and it will cause no harm, but it's not critical. The benfits of flushing would be to remove most if not all of the reg. ATF before using the synthetic. But some people just do partial changes, (at the same time they change their engine oil), by removing 2-2.5 qts. of ATF at a time and replacing it with 2.5 qts. of new synthetic . This is a slower method that will eventually replace all the ATF. Your choice.

Synthetic ATF has been used for years and have a proven track record in this application. In fact 6 weeks ago I changed out the PNP sensor out in our S90 and I added 1.5 qts. of Mobil1 ATF to the existing non-synthetic ATF in the trans. It has no ill effect. Next engne oil change I will perform the partial changeout as desribed above.....

Thanks, that answers a few questions. I didn't see an FAQ on the 960 transmission drain/refill process. I am clear on the drain with the engine off, but Volvo kindly shortened the dipstick tube way down into the engine compartment. I believe I should use some plastic tubing, and a funnel. At what point in the refill should I turn on the engine and cycle the fluid and top it up? I have done so often on other cars, but want to be well informed on the 960 process.

              Volvo Guy,

If you want to go the Flush route and do it yourself, here is the link :
              http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/TransmissionAutoAW30.htm#96090FluidFlush

I did it and it took about 1 hour. I tried to remove no more than 2 qt's at a time before refilling.

If you go the partial change route, you have two options :

              a) Pull the plug on the pan, this will drop from 2-2.5 qts. Yes, you will need a funnel and a long stiff tube that will fit into the tranny dipstick holder. Measure the fluid you took out and replace the same amount of fluid. Be sure the fluid is close to the same temperature. Hot fluid expands and if you replace the same volume with cooler fluid you can/will overfill the trans (depending on the temp. differential).

              b) You can use a hand operated vacuum pump, and suck out the 2-2.5 qts of trans fluid available in the pan thru the dipstick tube, and replace the same as in (a). I never have to get under the car or lift it up.

You can also repeat the above method as many times or as often as you like.... as long as you start the car and drive it in between to mix up the fluid. I do it once at each engine oil change. That way ~20-25 percent of the trans fluid is new every motor oil change.

There are pros and cons to each method of course.
