What would it costs to replace my lower crankcase cover near the oil pan, cover only (light stress cracks please help!!!!! 700

Hello folks!

Does anyone know of the costs for parts and labor in replacing a lower crankcase cover? It is located just above my oil pan, a series of bolts (hex) line across the lower perimeter of this aluminum cover. Whoever the previous owner had working on the car possibly over tightened these bolts, thus causing stress cracks! They are few in number, and very light, however i would like to eventually replace this cover. The crank shaft pulley is right in the middle of it. My oil leaks are minimal (gasket etc). My Volvo is a 1990 760 GLE V6, it runs so smooth, and it is in excellent condition, also my valves need adjusting, is that a long tideous job? Oh my mileage is 170,000! Please help!

Thanks in advance

Best Regards!

    Hello 244:

It is a pretty involved job-- the crank pulley has to come off, so you will probably have to pull the rad & shroud. The timing cover has 25 bolts (try to find the cover used-- my guess is that dealer cost would be ridiculous). You will need the two piece gasket and a new front crank seal as well as valve cover gaskets. This is a very good time to do the water pump and the valves, since you will have to take things apart in both of those areas anyway. Also a very good time to check out the timing chains and tensioners, if so equipped.

Haven't you already asked about the valve adjustment before? Book time is 5.5 hrs, does not require shims but does require moving the AC compressor. No special tools required-- the adjusters look just like those on an aircooled VW bug motor.

    Good luck!

Thanks Herb, my mistake i did ask about the valves before. My guess is the stress cracks should be alright for a while, whereas they are not deep. Would it be helpful to put some RTV copper heat/oil resistant sealant them?

      Thanks again!
