Engine Oil and Auto Trans Oil Temps? 700 1989

I have installed larger oil and trans coolers in my 89 745T, using Permacool thermostats in place of the sandwich style oil thermostat and the radiator cooler (that functions somewhat like a thermo in that it helps to both heat up and cool down the trans fluid). I also installed temp gauges that I did not have before, so I have no reference. And I have not verified them with a Raytek or similar infrared yet. My oil seems to stay down around 165 most of the time, and it takes a while to heat up when the car is first started. My trans fluid also takes a while to heat up, but it will go as high as around 180. I have not been driving the car hard yet, as I am breaking in the new engine and have only about 230 miles on it. Do these temps seem correct?

Thanks,

Philip Bradley

Engine Oil and Auto Trans Oil Temps? 700 1989

Hello Philip, I hope all is well with you. I am considering switching to an aftermarket oil cooler setup too. I want to get rid of the factory setup to make it easy to fit the larger B&M super cooler. What should I be looking at for these items, ford units, or?

    Philip,

The engine temp. seem really low. (I assume you are talking about °F) What are the thermostat beginning open and full open temps?

Engine Oil and Auto Trans Oil Temps? (whoops in addition) 700 1989

With engine oil temp too low, the condensation/water never leaves....but is 165°F always too low?.....maybe, maybe not. What weight oil are you using? Maybe run for a little while - Change oil, then run for awhile again (1000 or so miles) and do an oil anaylsis.

The trans. temp seems fine....I have seen much hotter.

      good questions for www.bobistheoilguy.com
