Timing gear wierdness..... 200 1980

Hello all,
I've spent my Easter weekend trying to make my current ride a better one.
Replaced the 3 seals, water pump , thermostat, timing belt and tensioner, and the intake gasket, valve cover gasket, and vac lines, freq valve, and control pressure regulator. As a result I now have a crank gear, and pulley assembly that wobbles. It wobbles seriously. I also replaced all 4 drive belts. My question is this. Is there a wrong way to put the crank sprocket back on? I thought I laid it down in the order and position I took it off, but its not right. Somehow I got messed up. Any info/help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Thanks for the replys, removing and retorquing the big bolt fixed it, after realigning of course. Now I have another issue which I will post in a new thread. Thanks again...

I did this when I changed by timing belt. I missed the key and torqued down the pulley, managing to deform the slot a little. Had to use a fine file to make things fit again.

Yes, it's possible. I always get it wrong the first time. The 700/900 FAQ has an excellent procedure and links. What always messes me up is the main crank pulley. Closely observe the tab on the backside of the pulley and the slot on the sprocket that it fits into. If I recall correctly, the wide groove on the sprocket and the wide groove on the pulley do not line up. They are 180 out. It's the tab on the back of the pulley that aligns it properly to the sprocket.

Also check, and recheck all your timing marks. It's easy to be just a tooth of, but that shouldn't cause a wobble. Check the two sprocket guides too. They should be oriented as to "funnel" the belt onto the sprocket.

    Good Luck,

    Tom

It sounds like your crank pulley isn't on right. Remove it and install it from below so you can ensure the key fits into its slot.

Lemme see if I understand what you're saying: The split pulley on the crankshaft wobbles as it turns, right?

OR, is the gear on the crank that drives the timing belt the one that wobbles?

I haven't done a B12F belt in a decade or so, but I do recall having to be very careful about having the woodruff key on the crankshaft drive gear fit properly.

The gear fit snugly on the crankshaft so wobbling seems to me to be not possible. The split pulley, on the other hand, can go together and wobble ever which way. If that's the case, it's a matter of taking the thing apart again, and reinstalling it very carefuly, in small increments.

    Good Luck,

    Bob
