o.d. slow to disengage 120-130

My older 120 o.d. (J type?) is slow to engage and more alarmingly slow to disengage. I know the wiring is good so know I will drain the oil, clean the filter.
However while I am down there is there anything else I could do?
The solenoid makes a nice healthy clicking sound so I"m guessing it's not that.

Also what oil does this tranny/o.d. use? My later style o.d. uses 10w40, and I was thinking maybe the slowness in the earlier one was a oil weight problem.

Thanaks as always, patrick.

In this instance, even thouogh the solenoid clicks, it still needs to be cleaned.
Due to age and other factors, the internal stem of the solenoid is not moving freely.

I'll attempt to send a file to your e-mail address.

Fluid you want to use is a straight 30 wt oil.

I will second that oil recommendation. You should be using 30W non-detergent oil, racing grade (if possible) in both of your ODs.

I don't think it is the oil. It may be a stopped up jet though.

If you don't get help from him through this post, e-mail Duane Hoberg
    in Kansas City at ODGuru@kc.rr.com

I have a self-extracting file of overdrive instructions he sent me that
I'll forward to you if you send your e-mail address.
