I have twice used the breaker bar up against the frame ... then bump the starter via your key ... just bump it. I learned it from a Toyota mechanic. Make certain you have it on the correct side.Good luck

Timing belt question 200

No, you do not need it. See other posts.

I bought the B230 crank tool from Chris at Swedish Engineering. It's the Volvo version that dealers buy and was about $42 including shipping. I think the tool itself was $36. It's very high quality, very easy to use, and was worth it to me. IPD also sells one for about $40.

Timing belt question 200

No, you can remove the crankshaft pulley without the special tool although the tool makes it easier. I use the tool and like it. There are at least three or four ways to hold the crankshaft while you loosen the bolt. Try a search in the box at the bottom of this page. Try "timing belt"; rope trick; changing timing belt. You'll get lots of information. An even better way is to go to the top of this page, click on FEATURES, and click on 700/900 FAQ. The B230 engine in the 700/900 models is essentially the same as in the 240. From the FAQ menu go:Engine:Seals, Belts, Crankcase Ventilation > Changing timing belt Bolyt Removal. Good luck.

Check the archives for the "rope trick." If you decide to use that method, follow the directions carefully. Be sure to start with the engine at TDC on the power stroke for cylinder #1 (valves closed).
