MORE oil leaks... 900

ok the turbo replacement continues...

the mech has 'fixed' the leak from the oil return pipe wher it goes into the sump...they had taken a chunk out of the new seal i had provided them...

but i still seem to have oil leaking - possibly from the joints in the pipes to the oil cooler (or turbo) right down by the filter...

today i de oiled the engine bay so i can have a close look tommorow...and found the TOP gasket for the oil return pipe on the chasis rail...GRRRRRRRR...

questions:-

1. is that gasket necessary
2. can it be fitted from above by feel by dropping the oil return pipe slightly
3. the oil pipe fittings which look like compression fittings, canthey be successfully tightened, or do they have some sort of gasket in there
4. anyone think of anything suitable i can do to the mechanic (slow, painfull....etc etc)

    Yes, you need the gasket. To install it as painlessley as possible, remove the wastegate actuator and rod. Then you can remove the two bolts and swivel the drain tube far enough to insert to gasket.

    Thanks for the replies guys, got under it (as far as i could today and checked for abscence of visible oil following gunking session yesterday, then took it for a 20 mile high speed blast...finding as follows:-

    1. no oil leaking on turbo return pipe - Hurrah!
    2. slight weep (and i mean slight) on those compression joints - evidence of 'dampness' no more, thinkl i might see if i can get a eigth of a turn on them...
    3. Oil hammering out of the cam seal...oh *(^(*&&*(&£(*&(*(*£&(*"&($£*&(*"£&(*"£& thing....
    4. Shut bonnet in disgust, locked car and went to do something more profitable like looking for a nice VW...also looking for a good volvo garage to fix this POS before I sell it! - wont get anything like what its cost me, but there us go - saw a nice deisel golf today for under $1000...
    5. Phone brother to advise to do same on his 740GLE POS...before it eats another gearbox or water pump....
    5. Eat humble pie from wife.com for next year or so...she wanted a VW, her last one just never needed work...as she pointed out today even the ford we had was better than 'the swedish thing'

    Holy mackrell, batman. We need another mechanic. or get a good manual and start doing the repairs your self. Sears sells a good set of tools for what your waisting on your mechanic. Has he ever seen a Volvo before? or worked on one other than yours?

      stuff manuals - i got this place, i have tools, but alas not garage to work in...yes he has seen at least 2..both of which I now find he has successfully stuffed up (inc writting off a m46.....)

    I'd much rather "see" what I was doing, if you can get under the car easily, it is not a difficult operation.

      yeh i know, but it doesnt seem to actually be leaking...and it is only a gravity drain aftewr all....

      I agree, but thats kinda difficult right now...top is much easier

      Well im wondering if they can just be 'nipped' up or if they are like compresion fittings with some sort of olive in there that needs to be replaced...

      considered that...i also know where there is a written, but drivable 740 that im considering deliering through his door...probably without having opened the door first...

      I would settle for a half way competant one...this is the shop that has also totled my brothers 740 gearbox by filling it with the wrong oil...then totled the mid prop shaft bearing whilst changing the box....

      we are considering 'delievering' a car to them...we may not bother waiting for them to open the doors first..
