Factory volvo trailer hitch question. 200

I have a trailer hitch off of a 1974 164, and beleive it or not it will bolt up to a 240 with some minor mods, like hacking off the rear plastic valance between the frame rails, and taking off some brackets etc. My question is the newer 240's have a long bolt that goes through the frame, and with a long enough bolt through the trailer hitch flange ends too but on the mid 80's through final production (I guess) has a nut welded on yht UNDERSIDE of the frame rail. So are you supposed to use the exhisting bolt and come up from the bottom, or get real long bolts and nut and bolt it which would be a more secure way it seems.I am not too comfortable with screwing a bolt from the bottom into a wleded on nut rather that a washer and bolt through the entire thing. Did I lose You? It is one of those you had to be there things.

    Goober:
I just installed one today. I got two longer bolts from BoltDepot.com and had a machine shop extend the threaded portion up the shaft. Then I ran them in from up above, threaded through the welded nut and had them extend about an inch below the frame. then I added an extra heavy duty washer and nut. Worked great for the DrawTite trailer hitch.

The bolt head (special hitch length bolt) is in the trunk and a big nut goes on the bolt (under the car) to hold the hitch on.

      Rhaire,

Thanks for the timely reply. So, does the long bolt (same threads as the welded in nut) thread right through the welded in nut, and then by putting on another nut under the car, you are kind of double nutting the bolt? My 1980 did not have the welded in nut, the trailer hitch length bolt just passed right through the frame , and bolted on the bottom. I am wondering if the threads will bottom out in the welded nut before it sets properly where it belongs? I know I am making a big deal out of something simple, I could just go to the hardware and get a little smallet diameter bolts and pass right through the welded nut.

I have not seen any 240 with a welded nut. The frame is threaded and the bopt turns down to teh frame projecting underneath. The hitch is boosted up and the nut is turned on, with a big fat washer. The long bolt is very hard to find.
