78 Bertone with rust in the usual places 200

Rust Never Sleeps

I am finishing up the mechanical work on bringing a 78 Bertone back to life. Now it is time to turn my attention to a couple of rust spots which are in the places Bertones are famous for.

At the windshield lower corners - It is starting to bubble up under the paint and little rusty streaks are running down over the paint. To repair this do I have to remove the windshield? is that difficult to do? how do I remove/replace the windshield? what is the likelyhood I'll crack it?

Second, there are bumps forming under the vinyl roof. I would like to do away with the vinyl altogether, has anyone done this? Is the underlying metal finished well enough to look good after painting? What would I have to do to make it look good?
The later Bertones were available without the vinyl and I prefer the look. If I have to keep a vinyl top is there any way to peel back and reattach the existing vinyl? What solvent will work on the adhesive? How can I assure that the rust doesn't reappear?

Thanks in advance
TR Conn

The only sure way ti repair the rust near the windshield is to remove the glass. Call a glass installer to come and remove the window. Then when you are finished with the repair have them reinstall the window, new adhesive tape and all. You will need to grind ALL of the rust off and treat with a rust inhibitor, primer, sealer and then paint. same goes for the roof. Also note that when you remove the mouldings that secure the vinyl to the 1/4 panels you will have to repair the the holes that will be exposed, weld it and grind it smooth. Bt now you will have two sections that look good and what the heck might as well do the whole car. Good luck!

as far as getting vinyl off there is a tool like for wallpaper it puts tiny holes into the vinyl and this lets a remover in and helps to remove the vinyl there is most likely glue under top so some body work will be needed if you try to rip and pull and scrape it off than there will be more body work to do some of my friends who do older car restoreing say heat gun also workes well i never done it that way. what ever you do repost please would like to know how that rare one came out when done good luck
