My 81 242t had one on it when I bought it, on an otherwise sweet 3" catback. The sound was no better than most of the riced out civics I've heard. It was a little louder than stock on idle, enough to drive bystanders away with their hands over their ears around 2,500 rpm, and got much quieter above that until 3,500 or so, when it was again absolutely infuriating. And I'm still trying to get myself out of the habit of shifting around 3,250 in order to avoid that sound.
I hated the thing and got it removed as soon as possible. Car sounded like rice, and the most annoying thing about it was that I kept looking over my shoulder to see who was driving in my blind spot because I could HEAR them, only to realize that it was me.
No discernable performance difference between the glasspack, straight pipe, and a Dodge TurboDiesel muffler (single baffle). I doubt any of my muffler changes affected my gas mileage (23-27mpg).

I had one (briefly) on my old '76 245. It was to be a stopgap while I gathered the cash for a complete new system. It replaced the second muffler in the system.
The effect was a real surprise. Rather than being quieter than the defective muffler, it was much louder! And the sound was rackety and not mellow, as I'd hoped.
There may be some acoustical reason for a four not sounding right with a glasspack-type muffler. They sound wonderful on V8s.

    Hello,

Yes. On a 244 Turbo that I used to have and all it did was make the car sound faggy.

        The comment was derogatory.

And my commentary was an anecdotal snappy quip.

Butt I'll bet it only sound bad while not in boost :)

My Flowmaster sounds ok, nothing like beans and brocolli accidental pressure release.
