Car will not idle. 200 1979

I have a 1979 244 DL and it was running just fine and then mid-way through a weekend trip it was cutting out after I started it. I gave it gas as I started it and kept the flow constant and it drove fine, except it wouldn't idle. It dies when ever I take my foot off of the gas. I replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs, distributer cap and rotor and am still having the same problem. Now when turn the key and I don't give the car any gas the engine starts with kinda a surge like normal but it makes one large squeak sound and dies. I was thinking it has to have something to do with the mechanism that supplies fuel when the driver is not manually pressing the pedal...Please help....Also what do you think the squeak sound could be?

Alright, you guys were right. There was a vacuum leak, it was actually a large tube, but it was tricky to see and even harder to get to. Now that the vacuum tube is fixed the car is running back to normal. Well sort of, now it is making some odd noises. The engine makes sorta a growl noise which I think may have something to do with the fan clutch, but i have no idea and also it occasionally makes the same squeak noise it was making before. The fan runs fine but it just seems that that is the area the growl noise is coming from.
These descriptions that I have provided are all pretty vague so I don't really expect anyone to be able diagnose it with the greatest ease. If you have an idea though let me know, I have very little knowledge of this stuff. If you need more explanation just ask.

244_DL: I agree with ZORAK linking your having to keep the foot on the gas to get it to idle. I did as ZORAK suggested, cleaned the TB, made the airflow unit nice and shiny, set the mixture just to the rich of best running, but I have to admit the trouble and gunk came with the car, so I believe it was slow to exhibit that behavior.

Yours, however, came on suddenly in the midst of a trip. That sounds more sparkish to me. But you've already done the tuneup. Could you have a split vacuum hose admitting a lot of unmetered air? That would stop your air flow meter from allowing enough fuel at idle. You could also check that electrically heated idle air control valve on the top of the valve cover; make sure it isn't stuck.

The squeak: What could squeak but drive belts and motor mounts? Last gasp shakes the motor?

This is a common condition with my 240. Normally it turns out to be in the fuel distributor. Spray off the throttle plate and such as well as anything else you can. On CIS eqiopped cars these things tend to gum up internally for some reason/ I suppose the best thing for it would be to take the whole unit out of the car and give it a good cleaning. Not that I've ever tried that. Also note that the mixture screw can be adjusted too. A gummed up unit can be adjusted for a richer mixture to some extent, but it will probably have to be cleaned out.
