Strange pounding noise 200 1981

1981 - 240 wagon, When I am making a left hand turn at low speed and hard on the throttle there is a loud puonding noise that seems to come from the front right corner of the car. If I am turning left not hard on the throttle there is no noise. I replaced a motor mount cause it was comming apart & I thought that might be the culprit, nothing changed. I looked at the exhaust to see if it was banging on the frame somewhere but could not see anything. My ball joints are a little loose but not too bad so I don't think it is them. It only happens when I am standing on the gas pedal & pulling into traffic or some similar manouver. I had a mechanic look at it but he could not find the scource.

Any Ideas?????

Thanks

Steve

After checking the items that JulieM suggested, check the rubber "donut" surrounding the center u-joint in the driveshaft.

    Strange pounding noise 200 1981

    Hi Steve,

While I am certainly NOT a pro, I had this problem as well. When I'd shift, if I wasn't extra careful and the car would lurch a bit, there would be a big bang. It was especially bad when turning and shifting/accelerating briskly. I had it looked at and though I am not sure exactly which caused the noise to happen, the following was done on the car and now it's fixed:

    - Torque rod bushings replaced
    - Lower steering universal replaced
    - RH lower ball joint replaced
    - LH innter tie rod replaced

I think that he said that the noise came from the bushings or the tie rods though.

I know it's not much help, but maybe it'll give you a place to start.

    Best,

    Julie
