AC no working 700 1991

Hello,
My AC won't turn on. I know because when the button is pressed, the fan doesn't turn on and there is no extra laboring by the engine. It also won't work when defrost is turned on. Checked the fuse under the radio. Where/what to check next? Thanks in advance
jordan

In all likelihood you have a system leak. Take it to a service shop for vacuum leakdown test, repair, and recharge. Consider R134 conversion. See the FAQ.

I don't think right off it is a leak because I can tell that the system isn't even turning on. Usually when working, the ac button/defrost nob turned on and the engine labors harder to operate the compressor and the vent fan kicks on a very low speed. None of which are happening now. I've had ac leaks before, but the mechanical components still operated. So what should I look at next?

If your system is low on freon then the compressor or radiator fan won't run. If your a/c system has the pressure switch mounted on the receiver/drier(silver can mounted on the passenger side fire wall) then remove the connector from the switch and momentarily jump the 2 terminals in the connector with a piece of heavy wire. If the compressor and fan runs then your a/c system is low on freon, the pressure switch is bad, or you have an electrical problem with the wiring up to the switch(check for 12 volts at either of the wires in the connector you unplugged, you should have power at one of the wires). Let us know what you find. John
