smokey exhaust in traffic 900

i have a 940 turbo 1994 when i stop in traffic or at lights i get quite alot of black smoke from my exhaust. i have noticed that i have an oil residue at the air intake side of the turbo and think that the problem is related to this, although im not sure. the spark plugs are a good colour and there doesnt seem to be any other associated problems, where do i start.

Sounds like the internal turbo oil seals went south on you. You can swap it out if you are moderately familiar with a wrench. A little bit of oil in the intake hoses (I've heard 1 Tbs. bandied about) is normal, more than that is excessive and points to the seals. Try draining the intercooler.

i had a turbo with blown seals...oil all over the inside of the pipes...none settled in the intercooler...

PS its easy to pull the intercooler to slush a load of degreaser around in it if you need to ...just remove the top straps and hoses and it lifts straight up...dont need to mess around with the rad (guess who droped the end of their degreasing gun into the intercooler.....)

Black smoke sounds more like its running rich to me, oil normally burn white...

If you step on it and you see black smoke i believe this points to:-

      1. Torn turbo hoses
      2. AMM going south
      3 O2 sensor

White smoke would be oil burning...

green smoke.....change your brand of tabacco!
