Swap 1987 to 1984 outside rearview mirrors 200 1984

Hi -

My 1984 245GL has the "karate chop adjuster" outside RV mirors. The RH one is a real PITA to get anywhere near right. Now I have access to both o/s mirrors from a 1987 240.

But - how to get them off the doors? It's not quickly obvious to me. Must the trim panel be removed?

And - or course - will they fit in the holes in the 1984 doors? If not, what to do?

Thanks,

Bob

I don't think the mirrors will fit. There was a change to the mirrors in 87, I think. The same year they changed the headlights to the large plastic rectangles.Could also be 86.If you look closely at the design of the light you will see the "triangle area" is a bit different. If the mirrors don't cost you anything then go for it,all iy will cost you is some time. But I don't think it will work. Look for electric mirrors from a gl or gle 1980-1984,85.Good luck!

Hmmmmmmm, about that swap 1987 to 1984 outside rearview mirrors 200 1984

After the post from MAYA10 (in the other #1 post from me) and then NELSON in this thread, I'll focus on the RH mirror first. I was planning on doing both, but looks like its 50/50 the swap won't work.

Looked at the 1984 outside scraper molding and metal cap - looks like to make the 1987 mirror fit will require some cutting, fitting, finagling, etc. Changing the 1984 to the black paint trim is too much work for the advantage of the easy-adjust mirror.

Thanks all for the info, makes my project much easier.

Regards,

Bob

The changes are minor. The older style trim mirrors have a black chrome triange trim piece on the outside that just lifts off when the mirror is removed. The newer mirror uses a shorter scraper trim piece. you can just exchange them. The black pieces are chrome underneath so you can just remove the paint. The only modification would be drilling the 2 extra holes. The exact location is not that critical. You can make them quite large. I must admit I have only gone the other way. I have put late model doors on my old turbo, and I like the turbo mirrors better, so i swapped the new mirrors out.

Bob,
You have an excellent idea. I have done this on of my 240 1982. The RH one is a convex mirror as you can find on 1991 more or less 2 years. I like it very much because the field of vision is much larger. Other vehicles are closer than they look so you must be carefull at the beginning.

As RHAIRE mentioned you must remove door panel and dont forget the inner and outer triagles. There is also a small hard rubber cap that stays in the door frame; you want it to snap in the inner plastic triangle.

There is also two holes you have to drill. If you have access to the car you could take a print of the hole location. Cut a triangle piece of hard paper or corn flake box and place it on the inside and rub a small screwdriver handle on it. That should leave a mark that you can transpose.

Just to be sure that what I think you said matches what you actually said.

The 1987 mirrors will fit the 1984 door once two additional holes are drilled. The large center hole on the 1984 is OK as is.

I have access to the donor car, I own it as a parts car. So having the time for trim panel removel, and making a template for the two additional holes is not a problem. The junkyard won't frown on me. Do you recall what the smaller hole drill size is?

The trim panel is a minor PITA, but it sounds like taking it all the way off is the best route to take. The panels are in good shape. No speakers, made for handcrank windows. Blue fabric color. No map pockets. Mebbe I'll put them up on eBay or on BBRD classified. I like the auction system, though.

Thanks for the great answer.

"The 1987 mirrors will fit the 1984 door once two additional holes are drilled. The large center hole on the 1984 is OK as is."

Yes, the big hole is the same and the fit is perfect. When you have removed the inside black plastic triangle you will see the two screws that hold the mirror in place. Take all your time and pry gently on that plastic triangle. I beleive it is box wrench 8mm and holes are between 3/16 and 1/4 inch. You can also bring the outer black metal triangle if yours is corroded and also re-use the fiber insulation. The door panel comes off easily. you need a small flat screwdriver to remove door handle plugs and window handle plastic cover that hides the screws.

When you have removed the plastic triangle look at how the rubber sleeve is fitted to the door frame. You want to install it back like this. When I did mine I did not slip the sleeve groove in place; that resulted in wind noise which made me look inside again.

Is the lens convex? If not you might want to sit in a car that has it and see if you like it. Lenses can be replaced easily. You need a 1/8 in. 4 in. long flat screw driver to in-lock the holding mechanism. There is a hole under to give access. A new lens cost about $40.

BC- you have to get the little plastic triangle off and it is held by the door panel so the safest way is to move the door panel a bit. Then you will see the fasteners. I think they will fit your doors but that is just based on the belief that Volvo never changed doors.
