oil light coming on!!! 200

Hi,
I have a 1985 245 turbo that has started a new problem. Sometimes when I have been running the car for a while and I'm braking the oil light will come on. It doesn't come on all the time but only when I'm braking and the car has been running for a while. The oil level is full so why is this happening?

The other posts indicate the things you need to check. The wiring problems are most likely and easiest to check. If that's not where the problem is, you need to find out what the problem is before you drive much. If the oil pump is on its way out and you keep driving, you can guarantee some expensive, time consuming work is ahead.

Check the wiring harness, sending unit, gauge and wiring. If they all check out, then it could be your engine main bearings, oil pump or clogged oil passages. When the bearings start to wear, at low oil pressure the oil warning light may flicker. This is an indication of worn bearings. If you press on the accelerator and the light goes out every time, it is your bearings. sooner or later a rebuild will be necessary. You can replace the bearings without a full rebuild. But check everything else first.

Eliminate the electrical and gauge possibility. Then eliminate the oil pump possibility by performing a oil pump pressure test. Then you must start thinking about internal problems such as the bearings.

Hopefully, it is an electrical problem.

Not long ago the oil light in my wife's 86 240DL started to go on when the rpms got low. I was sure that the oil pump was going; but the pressure tested fine. A new oil pressure sensor has taken care of the problem- no light since. Maybe the same thing for you? Pete

There's a chance your wiring has degraded, and when you brake the engine flexes in its mounts and tugs on the sender wire - either causing a short or an open circuit.

Check the wiring on the sender, and then the engine mounts.
