Transmission replacement 200 1983

Two years ago, I bought a used manual transmission (private sale - $100) for my 1983 240DL Sedan. Since I am able to pay for it to be installed so I can have a working overdrive unit, I've had the 175 lb. thing shipped (another $150 spent) to the West Coast, where I now live, and have been told by my mechanic that it's the wrong one...it's only for the 1976-1978 series. Doh!

I know I've lost $250 I can't get back. I also don't desparately need a new transmission installed (I only wanted to have working overdrive - and only a replacement tranny would do the trick). Here are my questions:

1. Does my mechanic's assessment sound accurate to any of you? Did they make different trannys every few years? I just don't know who to believe.

2. Do I have any leg to stand on by asking for some sort of trade from my Volvo shop? Is my tranny (now worthless to me) potentially worth something to them? Like in the form of an hour or two of future labor, or help in finding another used tranny? Or should I expect to totally lose this piece, or worse, be charged for disposing of it?

The only difference should be the input shaft spline count. The early were ten, the later (1978 1/2 - on) were 21 or 22 I think. The discs are interchangeable, so just purchase a ten spline disc, or a new clutch kit for the earlier car. Otherwise the clutches are the same.
You may also have a large front u-joint flange, and I believe that too can be swapped onto the older trans. At the moment I don't have both to compare, but it shouldn't be a big deal.

Yes, it sounds plausible because the early transmissions (up to '78) had a different number of splines on the input shaft making it wrong for your car. I think he is right on. You need a 79 or later ( to 85 for the speedo cable) transmission.

Don't the splines only interface with the clutch plate? I'm totally clueless on this, just throwing out ideas. Couldn't he get a later clutch and make it work? Or are the pressure plates and clutches from ealier cars incompatable with later flywheels? Could he get an early flywheel and make it work? Or are those incompatable with earlier engines?

Are we talking B20 or B21 here? M41 or M46?

      Sorry about the babbling,

if you have a m46 trans, i think you could change over the necessary items to make it work, including as everyone said the early style clutch. but if you have a m41, then i think it changes a lot more, like the driveshaft and maybe the shifter, lever, and linkage., there should be an id plate on the front of the tranny under the bell housing. of course if its a m41, it may not have a bell housing as they can be seperated.
