Fan motor squeals in right hand turns 700 1991

The subject about says it all. It is not a loud squeal, just enough to be a pain in the a$$. At first I thought it may be a wheel bearing, but when I turned the fan (and A/C) off to listen more closely, the sound went away. Then I thought it might be the A/C compressor, so I turned on the fan and pressed the "A/C Off" button to disengage the A/C compressor and the sound was still there.

The amount of pressure in the right turn does not effect the volume of the squeal. If I am in a hard right turn, or just normal correcting in straight line driving any right hand movement to the steering wheel causes the squeal. Also, the speed of the fan does not increase the volume of the squeal.

The sound goes away as soon as the right hand pressure is removed. Would like to fix this ASAP as I can't find any way to get to work making only left hand turns!!

I have checked the FAQs and did an archive search to no avail. I think if Poe drove a brick The Telltale Heart would have come out differently!! As always, any and all advice welcome and TIA.

I have had this right turn detector in a 740 and now a 940. It takes about 45 minutes to remove, grease, and replace the motor. Unfortunately I can't tell you how long this fix will last because the 740 was wrecked about a year after the fix and I haven't performed it on the 940 yet.

My instinct is to replace on a '91 - that car probably has more than a few good years left, and that 45 minutes is not the easiest 45 minutes you can spend on your car, on your back over the right front door sill!

As Mark wrote, you need a new blower motor. It squeals in turns because it is essentially a gyroscope, and the precessive forces cause the gyro (fan motor and fan) to put more force on the bearings. The 700/900 FAQ list a nice cheap direct substitute from a Chevrolet.

DP:

The A\C blower motor bearings are wearing out. To stop the squeal it will be necessary to replace the blower motor. This is an easy, straight forward procedure that someone with a modicum of mechanical ability can perform. The new blower motor can be had for less that $100.00 from a number of sources. Directions to this procedure can be found in the 700\900 FAQ in the A\C section.

Hope this helps and good luck.
