what's POR-15? 200

hello,

Some advice concerning POR 15 and its use, is this material a good rust preventative?

Remember Naval Jelly from my father's days, is POR-15 similar?

Am I really an "old timer"?

Ciao

    what's POR-15? 200

I've just been experimenting with POR-15 since this summer on both my cars. Cleaned up the rust under the battery tray on the 242 and was happy with it. Near perfect repair.
On the 122s I'm just trying to see how well this stuff works. I've done some patches on the parts car and left them exposed to the rain and snow since August, with no rust poking through or paint flaking off. Looks just as well as when I put it on.
Below image is what the stuff looks like. Yeah, I'm probably going to end up torching in new floorpans, but I thought I would see how well this stuff works.
The trial kit the other poster mentioned is worth a shot, its under $20 (thats what I used). And wear the gloves. This stuff does not come off.

You can get most of it off if you immediately scrub the affected area with a rag and lacquer thinner but 'tis better to wear the gloves. I got a spot on my leg that I didn't notice till shower time and it was dry by then. It took about a week before it was gone!

Hmmm, index shows one reply but I don't see it in the thread so this might be duplicate info.

POR-15 is a "rust converter" type of product unlike Naval Jelly which is acidic and removes rust. With POR-15 you just knock off the loose rust and scale, thoroughly degrease, wash with a strong detergent, dry, then paint the POR-15 over the rust. Heavy rust will require a second coat and it takes forever (well, hours and hours) to dry. If the treated area is not exposed to direct sunlight then it does not need to be top-coated with anything.

Product comes with detailed instructions. They have a "starter kit" that contains a couple ounces of POR-15, some rubber gloves, and a couple bottles of cleaning solution for under $20. The starter kit did the master cylinder in my 57 Chevy, and 2 coats on the l/f inner fender, some frame, and the trunk wells in the 244.

The stuff works very well. I have also used MarHyde One Step with good results as well.

POR-15 is a paint like substance that is pretty darn good at covering areas that were previously rusty. Just short of powdercoat in protective ability, and in some cases better, with a top coat.

I trust nothing to stop already rusting areas. Follow instructions to the T, but clean all steel back to solid, very clean metal.

Naval jelly is not related to POR-15. Naval jelly is simply phosphoric acid thickened with methocel, and a dye added.

Paul, would it make sense to clean the area with naval jelly and then use the POR-15? Might save a lot of sanding and scraping(?).

        I dunno.

Firstly you would still need to make sure the area is 100% clean (and that means clean off all the remaining navel jelly (and lint)....in my experience naval jelly doesn't eat rust that well...
