center console lights 200 1990

i replaced the bulbs in the center console of my '90 240. they light up now, but does anyone know if there are housings for the lights to fit into - like the one under the "change" tray. they're just sort of dangling there and only slightly lighting the temp control stuff. it was pretty hard to get behind there to see.

also i found two severed wires (one fat one with many colored smaller ones inside and one thin black one) at the base of the center console between the plastic cover and the metal frame. they were severed at the passenger side corner. does anyone know what these are and wheather or not they should be severed? there was a car phone, could they have been for that? will this cause a problem when installing a new radio?

thanks

The bulb holders slide into holes in the console near where you found them dangling. Remove the left and right kick panels (a plastic 1/4 turn thingy on the bottom and a small Phillips head screw at the top on each). Then take out the two phillips head screws on the bottom front of the console. Then you can pull the front of the console out a little bit to see where these lamp holders go. It's still a tight area to work but you should be able to see or feel the holes.

center console lights are easier to get at..... 200 1990

Once the console front is loosened and moved AFAP rearwards. The top moves farther than the bottom, you'll get enought room without forcing it. Then use a flat tip screwdriver between the coin tray and the side of console front to pop off the coin tray. Feel under it first and you'll find two pop-on clips at each end. Work in from the sides, not the front. Work one end loose first. Use care and there will be no damage.

Then it is immediately apparent where that center light holder goes. The other two are easily seen, too. I have done this job with the coin tray in place, but trying to hold a light and a mirror and then get ones free hand down in there is a job even for a trained chipmunk, which I ain't.

      Good Luck,

      Bob

PS. Good idea, to get a pack of these bulbs and also the tiny grain of wheta bulbs that go lots of hard-to-reach places, too. Not cheap, but having 5 or 10 in your in-home Volvo Parts Department is worth not traipsing to dealer or elsewhere to find one or two.

I just finished replacing the bulbs in the center console of my '92 245. There are 3 bulbs, all of which fit into round sleeves in the center console face. Even when they are installed properly they don't light particularly well. Buy a couple packs of bulbs-- the same bulb fits in the light over the rear ashtray, the center console switches, the dash bulbs and the shifter backlighting.

    Good luck!
