Finally got my coolant level sensor up and running this weekend. I installed it a couple months ago, following the procedure in the FAQ, but when it was all done I couldn't get the warning lamp to come on. I had neglected to purchase the Volvo wiring diagram...
When I got the wiring diagram this week, I instantly saw what the problem was. The wire from the sensor had to run to position #5 (rather than #9, where I had initially put it) in the 12-pin connector on the Yazaki instrument cluster:

And the results:

Moral of the story: buy that wiring diagram!

Great photos, Brian.
I will trade you photos of your coolant tank mod for some of my cool, valve husher R&R before and after photos. :o)
'92-'95 North American English wiring diagram owners, Help. It looks like two (2?) wiring diagram service manuals are listed. The first one is maybe generic for '92-'95. The second is specific to the model year. Are both needed? I would hate to see the info. duplicated.
(This one looks like it's for all '92-'95 940 models)
TP3502201 Lite., Instru. & Misc. Equip. (Fault Tracing, Repair and Maintenance; Gr. 35-38) Specifications, Fuses, Lights, Bulbs, Motors, Relays, Sensors Remove and Install $33.65
(Specific to '92 only)
TP31960/1 Wiring Diagram (Fault Tracing, Repair and Maintenance; Gr. 39), 1992 Models 740,940

The array of manuals is a bit confusing. The one I got is '93 specific... TP 32208/1. So far, so good. BTW it was sent very quickly... think I ordered online on a Friday, and had it the following Tuesday.

What I would like to know is, why does Volvo NA sell this and most Volvo dealers in Europe refuse to?

Brian, thanks: I have updated the FAQ. You are correct: the wiring varies by year and model and the wiring diagram is absolutely essential.

How come there are no wiring diagrams for the 92 940 T at that link which Brian sent ?
Thanks

The 1992 wiring diagram applies generically to all 940s of that year.

Steve - many many thanks for your excellent work on the FAQ.
Glad I finally heeded your call & got the wiring diagram... I can tell it will help with many other things. The diagrams in my Haynes for 940 are a joke compared to these.

Hi Brian,
I had my 93 945T instrument cluster out yesterday with the intention of installing a coolant sensor. I didn't find a 12 position 'L' shaped connector as mentioned in the FAQs, but an 18 position 'L' shaped connector. Put it back in and decided to do more research.
When my instrument cluster was out I noticed the bulbs are numbered and the positions on the connector are numbered. Assuming your bulbs are numbered, do the numbers for the bulbs correlate with the numbers on the connector?
My instrument cluster maybe a VDO. If so this may explain differences.
Thanks in advance,

Here's the back of my '93 cluster, with the 12-pin connector indicated:

And, from the wiring diagram, a list of bulb/connector pin correlations (looking at bulbs from left to right, on the back of the cluster):
0 (first hole is blank - looks unwired)
1 turbo diesel charge pressure = 12 pin connector, #10
2 diesel preheating = 12 pin, #8
3 SRS = 12 pin, #12
4 seat belts = 12 pin, #6 & 7
5 overdrive (auto trans) = 2 pin (5/1L), #2
6 overdrive (manual trans) = 2 pin (5/1L), #1
7 (not listed, but shown in diagram... the one you want!) engine overheat = 12 pin, #5
8 ABS = 12 pin, #4
9 parking brake = 12 pin, #3
10 brake warning = 12 pin, #2
11 high beam = 18 pin, #18
12 oil pressure = 18 pin, #17
13 battery charging = 18 pin, #16
14 bulb failure = 18 pin, #15
15 rear fog lights = 18 pin, #14
16 washer fluid level = 18 pin, #13
17 service light = 18 pin, #11
18 trailer = 18 pin, #10
19 check engine = 18 pin, #9
Hope that helps!

Thanks Brian for your troubles.
When I revisit the cluster will use your images and info as a reference point. Volvo made differences between markets. This can be frustrating at times...however persistence generally wins out.
Take care,

John - let's see...
++I didn't find a 12 position 'L' shaped connector as mentioned in the FAQs, but an 18 position 'L' shaped connector++
I guess the setup could be different. The Volvo wiring diagram for the cluster matched up exactly with what I found in my car. The diagram makes no mention of VDO/Yazaki... and doesn't give alternatives for different markets, although the book does this for other components (ie headlamps).
++When my instrument cluster was out I noticed the bulbs are numbered and the positions on the connector are numbered. Assuming your bulbs are numbered, do the numbers for the bulbs correlate with the numbers on the connector?++
No exact correlation... pins on the 12-pin plug mainly run to bulbs on the left side (looking at the back of the cluster); pins on the 18-pin mainly go to bulbs on the right... that's about it. The wiring diagram makes it immediately apparent how things hook up.
I have a picture of the whole back of the cluster at home... I'll post that later & maybe that will help.
Hang in there, you'll get it set up... - Brian

Brian, how did you make the little icon label? Well done. Looks factory.

Actually, it IS factory. Apparently all the 940 clusters have that indicator, but no bulb behind it (also, no coolant level sensor, and no wiring for it). 960s of the same vintage came with the system all set up.
