Throttle body gasket missing!! 200 1988

I tried cleaning out the throttle body of my 88 245 this weekend because I was having trouble with my idle loping. I also had problems with hesitation. After removing the throttle body I noticed it had no gasket installed. Could this have contributed to my problems. I put one on after cleaning. Is it also recommended to clean the intake manifold. How do I do it.

Thanks
Chris Sambrooks

I think it's more important to clean the throttle body. There the air flow past the throttle plate is critical to good operation. Even a thin coating of gunk where the throttle plate meets the body can affect the idle. Once the air has passed into the manifold, deposits would have less effect on the operation of the engine, unless they were really very thick.

You ask how to clean the intake manifold? I wonder who recommended it.

The only time I've done this is with it completely removed and I was more interested in cleaning the outside! Had one hot tanked, but again, it wasn't because there was too much yuck on the inside. Guess I would just get what you can from the throttle body opening with a rag.

There was nothing on the gasket surface? Clean metal? That is unusual work.

    Hi Chris,

There should be a gasket as metal-metal is not the best seal! The loping idle could very well be due to the missing gasket.

As far as cleaning the TB, I use carb cleaners and plenty of rags. It seems to do the job for me. I don't recommend you remove the throttle switch when cleaning as you will need to adjust it afterwards if you were to remove it. A dirty TB will also cause poor idle.

    Cheers,
    SM
