Fuel Filter Replacement....Did I make a mistake??? PLEASE HELP 200 1982

I replaced my fuel filter but didn't depressurize first... Everything went ok during replacement but the engine surges badly now. Anyone know if I need to depressurize the system or if I screwed anything up by this???

Just a guess...If the filter had not been changed for along time,(clogged up) putting in a clean one could have put more pressure on the fuel pressure regulator and caused it to fail. Now the the fuel pressure is too high, injectors are spraying too much and the computer is trying to correct a rich condition causing the surge? If the FPR has never been changed you may consider replacing it as a maintenance item.

Right after I replaced my fuel filter my FPR went out...it was 19 yrs old.

      Fuel Filter Replacement....Did I make a mistake??? PLEASE HELP 200 1982

Hi and Thank you so much for confirming that the FPR is gone bad because I had gotten a suggestion on turbobricks message board that the FPR had gone bad and the gave me a way to check by smelling the vacuum hose that goes to it and the symptoms pointed to FPR failure. But yes it had been at while from my best guess that the fuel filter had not been changed in a long time. But thank you so much sdol for your help. My Volvo has over 500,000 miles on it and would be very upset if it was something major cause I love to drive and show-off my Volvo. ;P

Is surging the main problem a bad FPR causes, or does it commonly cause other symptoms?

This reply is to Art but I put it in the wrong place. ;) Oh it is a LH Jetronic and yes the job of getting it from under the car was completely frustrating but that was nothing compared to the frustration that my engine surging caused. Thanks though because I have determined from sdol's experience and from a post from turbobrick's forum that it is the fpr. Thanks so much I am so exstatic right now cause I love my Volvo and was about to give up on her. But now I can drive it.

Good point. I can't tell if it is LH1.0 or K-jet. I figured it is K-jet because there was no mention by Tom of the dirty rotten job getting that filter out from under the car.

Nothing of that sorts is mentioned in Bentley manual. As long as you have the arrow pointing in the direction of the fuel flow, it should work just fine. Did you knock out one of the connectors while replacing the filter??

    Cheers,
