Help! Car cranks, sparks- but no start. 200 1987

I'm in need of some help, I have an 87 240 and i can't get it to start. I haven't driven it in about a week because I got busy with school and now it won't start back up. The starter works, the engine cranks- and I confirmed that there is spark. There is gas in the tank aswell. I'm not sure why it doesn't want to come to life. It did rain quite heavily during this time, but i've never experienced such a problem in the two years i've owned it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Mike

THanks guys, I'll check it out tomorrow when the sun is back and let you know what I figure out. I was fearing a dead fuel pump but I hope it's really just the fuse. It's definitely a fuel delivery problem and you are probably dead on. Thanks!

Mike

I had this exact problem with my 87 240 last year. Happened while a friend was borrowing it, so I had to go make a service call. Right after a heavy rainfall, it wouldn't start. Found the fuel pump relay hanging on it's wires under the dash.... hanging upside down.... the water followed the harness right down into the relay and filled it up. Burnt it right out. New relay, and it fired instantly. Resecured the relay to the firewall so it wouldn't repeat, then went after the water leak later (it was the rubber goo around the wiper motor that I just replaced.)

Are the fuses clean? When was the last time you cleaned the 25amp fuse in the holder mounted on the drivers side fender well under the hood? If that doesn't help try jumping a wire between the fuse for the intank pump and the mainpump- I THINK they are 4 and 6 If you run a wire between those two you should be able to hear the pumps run and if you then try to start it and it runs you probably have a problem with the fuelpump relay. It may only need to be resoldered rather than a new one purchased. The relay is on the passenger's side footwell up against the firewall. You will need to remove the fiber panel above the passenger's knees to access it. It is white an measures about 1x1x3. Carefully pry off the cover and resolder the joints on the circuit board. If you examine it with a magnifying glass you can usually see the bad joint (if there is one) Good luck.

I think the most likely cause for what you describe is the infamous 25Amp located in a bit behind the battery against the fender well. It is spade type fuse and the contacts or where the wires connect on it often corrode. This fuse supplies power to the furl injection system

Another likely cause is the fuel pump relay located inside of fire wall up behind the glove box. Resolder or replace it. There is info this in the 700/900 FAQ section which will apply to your 240 as well.
