Tickover Problems 900 1991

The Car is a 1991 940 estate with 2 litre non turbo engine B200. Have problems with tickover. From cold car either conks out or it will rev between 1,500 revs and 2,000 revs. Even when hot it sometimes conks out.
The EMM has been replaced and the throttle body was cleaned. Now the garage tells me that I need to have a new idle valve and the "computer" needs to be reprogrammed for the new EMM.
Having spent lots of money already I am loathe to waste anymore.
Help...How can I read the codes from the engine? Do I need specialised equipment.
How do I reprgram the computer to accept the new EMM.
Any suggestions on how to solve the problem would be greatfully accepted!!!!!

Try this link for reading fault codes

and this link for general diagnostic help

they could be right in that it is the idle speed motor but I wouldn't be too sure about it since they seem to be diagnosing by the old "replace-a-part and see" technique. I'd find another mechanic.
