convert automatic 780 BERTONE COUPE to manual trans. can it be done, how? 700 1989

hello, i have a 780 bertone 1989. its white with a blue and black with a auto transmission. i bought the car w/ 99K and the trans went at 143K. i had it rebuilt to above fact. spec. at cost of 2,000. i would like to convert it to a manual transmission.

What do i need?

do people ever do it?

better gas milage?

does top speed increase, and can i increase the top speed through gearing?

i am going to rebuild the engine, and try to get about 190-200 hp, what are the best ways to accomplish this, and will it kill the manual or automatic transmissions?

thank you all for any information...........any body need a rebuilt AW-71 (with papers) soon?, make offer!

So far, no one has menntioned changing the differential gears to the manual trans. 3:54 ratio from the current 3:91 ratio (if memory serves). That should make a huge difference in acceleration. 'Friend of mine converted his 1800ES from auto to manual trans and didn't change the rear end. 'Complained that he didn't get better performance! Duh.

Wow... kismet! 700 1989

Well now meteorcv...

For starters, I'm the guy that did the writeup for the FAQ about this swap...

The M46 I used for the swap now has very high miles on it, and is generally mush. I'm going to swap it soon for an M47 I have in the garage...

We're close to each other... I see from your profile you're in North Attleboro? I'm in NH, but I go down to Marion a lot...

I have,(that you may want if you do this swap) that I would be looking to sell relatively cheap soon:

M46 driveshaft for a 7-series.
M46 tranny-mount crossmember, powdercoated "bumper black"
M46 shifter mount for 7-series, also powdercoated "bumper black"
M46 OD, about 60k miles on rebuild, works just perfect, fed Redline MTL.
The above is all in my car, running now. (The M46 in front of the OD is the "mush" I mention above.

I also have another M46, ~40k miles, with the OD removed, that you can have for nothing... (OD is next to it in a box, partially dissasembled...)

I'm not looking to make any real money, just enough to get me a driveshaft/trannymount/shiftermount for the M47...

Let me know if you're interested...

You need to read..... THIS:
http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/VolvoAW70M46Conversion/AW71M46Conversion.htm

It covers EXACTLY what to do. NOt a small job, but certainly possible using all factory parts.

As for performance upgrades, a LOT of discussion about that exact subject can be found at www.turbobricks.org. The stock transmission (AW71 or M46) should be able to handle just about anything you can throw at it.

Good luck!

george,

the engine is a b230ft, red block, any info would be great!

do you know of any 780 parts cars in europe, with the chrome slat grille? they came on europe only 780's and i think it looks better than the american egg-crate!

The egg crate came on the turbo did it not, and the chrome on the V6? I would have thought that you can get hold of a chrome grille in the States too but sure, breakers and parts people in Europe could find you one, but they are rare here. Try in Holland, Belgium, Sweden and Italy. Anywhere else they are really uusual. If your's is the B230FT then converting it to an M46 is dead easy and well-documented. I am replacing my M46 in my diesel for an autobox, I hate stick shift.

convert automatic 780 BERTONE COUPE to manual trans. can it be done, how? 700 1989

george,

thanks for the information! seems like all cars in europe are manual transmissions, and all american cars are automatic transmissions.

the turbo and six cylender 780's came with the egg crate grille in the us. the headlights are poor, unlike the european lights, the cars dident come with the cold weather package and dident have the 16 or 20 valve engine or a desel engine. Also the cars had 15 inch wheels as standard, and in europe they usaly came with 17 inch polaris wheels.

point is, i like european cars, and i searched for over a year for my 780, having owned 2 760 turbos, i began to like volvos. i hope to source all the parts nessasary to bring my bertone to european spec.

i love italian styling so much too, so it was great that bertone and volvo concived this coupe, its more practical than a maserarti bi-turbo, as for as parts and opperating costs go, but when i find a nice one i'll buy it. also, maybe i will someday get a alfa romeo 156 too.........those are also great cars!

but i will never get rid of my 780..........NEVER! i'll always keep it.

talk to you later george
