odometer won't work now! 200

1990 240DL wagon. Just removed the temp comp board to correct the temp problem. Now the odometer and trip odometer isn't working. Speedometer is working fine. I removed the instrument cluster again and all gears turn and are not jammed. All wires connected correctly. What did I do wrong or is it just a coincidence? Thanks-Russ

Don't forget to read this page before undertaking the project (changing the gear. I used the Kaplan gear). It is really an easy one. I bet you can do it at lunch time. It took me 1 hour to change the gear and clean the temp. comp. board including disassembly, parts cleaning and assembly.

It's that easy.

Well, it's probably just a coincidence that it chose right then to break-- or a maybe a little piece of something got broken off and wedged into the gears when you turned the cluster upside down.
Either way, you need to pull it again and replace the broken gears. Also it is *possible* that the trip reset button has gotten jammed against the gear wheels somehow but I doubt that.
The usual problem is that the tiny tan plastic gear under the silver motor cover on the side of the speedometer has lost a few teeth.
The place to get the new gear is here:

Or try to find a good cluster in the junkyard. Any 86-up unit will be fine. However it's hard to find a good one. Probably better off giving Mr Kaplan $25 and be done with it.
