Ignition advanced, No adjustment, Part III 700 1986

Hey all-

Pulled the crank pulley, thanks for the rope trick Mr. Foster, couldn't find the flywheel inspection plate in this '86 745T with 218K. A little PBlaster in the right spots seemed to reduce the hammer whacks needed to remove the pulley.

Okay ante up, all you big rollers-

The crank pulley could easily be original. It's a Volvo part, I've got maintence records that I'll check, but the rubber is VERY cracked and old. I don't see any reference marks to show slippage, but it wouldn't surprise me.

HOWEVER...

After pulling the pulley, I started checking all of the index marks. The index on the cam pulley lines up fine, ditto on the intermediate pulley. The crank washer timing mark is pointing directly at the timing belt on the passenger side of the sprocket. From what I've read here there and everywhere this mark is supposed to line up with the "casting mark" on the oil seal housing? I see this raised portion of the oil seal housing, and I'm reading that as where the washer's timing mark should align. This would put my belt off about a tooth at the CRANK ONLY.

So I'm going to have a late lunch and debate whether to just line up the belt marks on the crank sprocket and then adjust the cam and interm. pulleys to match, or simply rotate the crank so its mark is lined up as well. The direction of movement required is righty-tighty, so I may try this, or maybe squeeze the old pulley back on.

Any input there is appreciated.

Dylan

Thanks to all the high rollers placing their bets....

New belt and crank pulley are now on and tested.

Those who placed their chips on "slipped belt" win by a tooth.

I had to turn the crank 1 tooth clockwise to get the index lined up. I did this by wrapping the old belt around just the crank sprocket and pulling on the left. It moved quite nicely into TDC.

Don Foster's Rope Trick did a great job torquing the crank pulley bolt.

The car performs much better than before. Ignition timing was set at around 8 TDC, I reset to an honest 12 BTDC and the motor seems to be running very nicely.

Thanks to all for the help-
Dylan

On your 740, the alignment of the intermediate pulley is of no consequence. It doesn't drive anything that's timing-related. But you sure could have the crank a tooth off. I'm surprised it ran at all but maybe it would be OK until you got on the boost. Definitely a problem there.... I'd tear it down and make sure everything is timed right and see what you got.

So just for confirmation- the timing mark on the crank sprocket washer IS supposed to line up with the raised portion of the oil seal housing? At roughly 11:30? Looking at the casting, it's about halfway in between the intermediate pulley and the passenger side of the timing belt.

I'm thinking, since the other two index marks are dead on right now, I'll cut the old belt off and try rotating the crank so the index is lined up. Failing that, I guess I'll rotate the cam and interm. pulleys to match.

But yes this car had reduced power- not much going on until I hit boost. Lotsa noise, not much action. It "happened" while flying along the highway at high engine speeds and with much shifting. The past owner had tweaked the boost to 15 lbs and I am still kicking myself for not changing it back until AFTER it "happened". Crank pulley may or may not have slipped, but it looks so old I wouldn't want to put it back on.

Thanks
Dylan
