Still having trouble...need more things to try. 200 1988

Starter engages, but will not fire up!

Ok so here is the scoop. It all started when I changed the Valve cover gasket and the oil last weekend. I put back all the straps and cords. Before I started the engine I did change out the Fuel Pump relay (White) simply because it is nearing that time and didn't want to be stranded or have to worry about it later. After all this...no start

Now today I have re-grounded (sanded down to metal to metal) the fuel grounds and the engine ground on the Valve cover. I replaced the in-tank pump (ipd sez level 3...ha it was easier than I thought), still no start

other things I have done, unplugged AMM, I do have spark, I do have wet plugs after cranking so fuel and electricity is getting there. The cap, rotor, wires are less than 2 months old.

Is there something I did wrong during all this? I am bewildered right now. It has alway's fired right up and fired up strong everytime previous.

Sorry for the long post, all advice is appreciated
Thanks everyone!
Chuck

P.S. frequently on start up the car has made a quick 1-2 sec 'grr - grind' type of noise coming from what sounds like the left front side...I don't know what this was or if it had anything to do with my current problem.

    update - 1. 200 1988

Ok so I changed out the FPR (fuel pressure regulator) and still no start. Cleaned off the plugs very well (can't get new ones till morning), no start, checked for spark - orange spark now. I am going to look for the radio suppresion relay, the FAQ mentioned something about that as a no start possibility.

Did you try your old fuel pump relay again? I have seen new ones that were no good. Make sure it's in correctly- it can be forced into the plug backwards and it DOESN'T RUN. It may BUZZ in that condition however.
Also I'm assuming you've checked out the 25A fuse right behind the battery- that little fuseholder is only $3 from Volvo and well worth it...
The other "dead in the water" thing to check would be the crank sensor. However if you're making spark it ought to be good. You could have disturbed it's wiring when going after the valve cover... I guess. Your 89 is the first year to use one so therefore it's one of the oldest of these parts in service, and definitely subject to both intermittent and sudden failures.
Uh, silly question but you did absolutely get the dist cap and plug wires back on correctly right? #1 plug wire is forward, and against the head, closest to the water neck?
Seems too easy... I'm leaning towards a crank sensor failure. Replace the plugs again too if they've been wet with fuel.

Have you checked the fuel pressure regulator?? If the plugs are "wet" it could be that you are getting too much fuel. Pull off the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator and see if you are getting a gas odor. If so I vote for a bad fuel pressure regulator.

      Thanks Rob,

I will check out the crank sensor, Bentley can guide me through that. I do have an '88 though, just a clarification since you mentioned I have an '89. Does this change anything?

I will be checking for vacuum leaks as well.
