center console lights 200 1990

at night, when the lights are on, there should be some lights on the center console , right?
there aren't any on in the '90 24 wagon i just bought, and there is no power in the radio (it's possible it's fried - they said it hasn't worked for a couple years, along with the tailgate wiper, etc - gonna replace the wiring harnes). the hazard and rear defog switch lights work, and the seatbelt reminder light works, as does the glove box light.
i'm gonna check the bulbs when it stops raining. are there any other possible diagnosis/ fixes? the radio thing is what really throws me. and if i turn on the headlights it sometimes cuts off the seatbelt chime early.
also, in the fuse panel, someone did some sort of odd rigging of a wire with a long glass fuse like thing in a plastic case to the #1 fuse prong. anyone have any idea what they might have done this for?

i replaced the bulbs in the center console, that was the issue. they light up now, but does anyone know if there are housings for the lights to fit into - like the one under the "change" tray. they're just sort of dangling there and only slightly lighting the temp control stuff. it was pretty hard to get behind there to see.

also i found two severed wires (one fat one with many colored smaller ones inside and one thin black one) at the base of the center console between the plastic cover and the metal frame. they were severed at the passenger side corner. does anyone know what these are and wheather or not they should be severed?

got the radio to work. it was the two fuses in the back of it and the wire on the fuse #1 - to was too loose. (where was this wire originally attached?)

thanks

The fuse installed sounds like it's probably power to the radio. IT's the shortest run to the fuse panel, and most installers seem to go for "easy" as opposed to "correct". There could very well be two fuses for the radio, and it's possible that one of them is in the factory harness for the factory amp. Even though I have a 91, I haven't done much with the factory radio wiring, so I can't say for sure where that fuse might be located. However, it's easy to get the radio out of a 240- pull the top square blank panel (or gauge surround) next to the radio with a small screwdriver, then there are two screws on the left side of the radio faceplate. The right side just snaps in. If you can gently press it out, the "speaker" grille on top of the dash will pop out and provide easy access to the wiring.
When reinstalling, keep it out of the wiper linkage- it cut the ground wire on mine once.

Also! 200 1990

Before cleaning the fuse panel disconnect the negative on your battery. You may need to remove the whole front console with a torx driver to replace the little bulbs behing the temp control, cubby hole, and below the change shelf. You'll see how many once you get it open. Go ahead and replace all bulbs. It's cheap and you won't want to do this again for a while. Good Luck.

Hi Adam. you know I got to thinking maybe they "sealed" that #1 fuse for a good reason. Maybe it was getting wet? I'm not really sure, cause I can't see it. Maybe it would be a good idea to right now clean all the fuses and contacts with sandpaper or better yet a little wire brush (clean the 25 amp fuse in engine also). After doing that... check to see if your radio works now. Not sure about your year, but I have a fuse to my radio when you take it out. It's behind the radio in the wiring when you take it out. It's in a plastic case and it's a 1" long glass fuse. You might want to check that out also. Now about the center console light... it may be burned out like mine. All you have to do is take a flat screwdriver and pop the light out to check the bulb. It's all worth a try! Take care Adam. Michael
