electric fan switch '86 740 700

Does anyone know at which temperature the electric cooling fan will switch on?
I would like to test it by submersing it in boiling water and using a continuity tester to see if it trips at the approriate temp. A new one from
volvo is $55 so, a test is in order. Has anyone tried a layer of silicone applied to the fan sensor switch, and allowed to dry before install as a method of achieving a tight fit in response to the loose sensor problem with replacement radiators?
