evaporator on 740 700 1991

I am planning to install a new evaporator in my friends 1991 740 wagon.
It appears to require a lot of dismantleing and I recall that on some cars
we used to simply cut the plastic case and reseal it with a stiff mastic.
This saved a lot of labor and I ask if that is practical on this car.
Also, I'ld appreciate any other helpful advice.
Yes, I have done a lot of a/c work.

I may need to do this on my 940, and having just gone through a condenser fiasco, I have only several words for you to contemplate. Buy an OEM evaporator, this work is too much hassle to mess around with questionable aftermarket stuff. Just my 2 cents, good luck.

It is possible, but it is probably easier to just remove the fifteen or so screws and pull the plenum lower cover off. The evap comes right out if you do this: the only grief is reaching the screws which in some cases are hidden and tough to find. The case is sealed with mastic.
