Seat belts 700

I bought a electric seat switch cluster from a breaker in California. It is smaller than European ones. Looking on e-Bay, I notice that the whole bin/cluster design is different on US cars. Someone told me that US seatbelts have two rolls, one on B pillar and one on the seat itself. Is this true, why is this? Any ideas?

I believe that would probly have something to do with the US goverment trying to protect us, i personally would have it no other way, i had the unfortune of testing a volvo in an accident a few years back and when both reels locked up it locked me into the seat like i was part of it, i hit someone doing 60 in there drivers side door ( damn teenagers dont look both ways ) and thought i had just tapped her car boy was i suprised when i opened my eyes. Also it fits better with both reels. just my 2 cents on this one.

My 87 745 does. I don't know why. I don't particularly like the arrangement, either. When I'm strapped in, if I want to lean forward to get in the glove box or pick something up off the floor, the B pillar reel runs out of strap! If I pull some of the belt from the seat reel and let the B pillar reel take up the slack, then I can reach things.

    Another Volvo safety design, maybe?
