Airbag removal? 700 1988

I've been picking over a 740GL carcass at the local u-pullit. The airbag is there and if I can get if for a reasonable price I'd like to take it.

Problem is, I don't know how it comes out. Any help appreciated.

Torx 27 or 30 screws accessed through holes on the back side of the steering wheel. Pulling the top and bottom coveres makes it easier. Note, after 15 years, the air bag is considered "expired" by Volvo. They recomend air bag replacement and system check at 15 years. Just thought you should know.

Screws in from the back of the steering wheel. They might be torx on the 88 but I'm not sure of that.

The contact reel can be brought along if you can as well. I don't remember offhand if the 940 contact reel has to be pinned to keep it from unwinding or not. The desings on contact reels vary by car to car, and since I've worked on multiple lines' SRS systems (one of my favorite things to do, actually) I can't remember the specific details of the 940/740 design. You'll figure it out though.

I'll pull the upper and lower column trim and see if I can get to the screws. Might take the turn signal stalk as even though the car has 200,000 miles, those are "Memphis Miles" and the turn signals never get used.

I wanted the upper steering column cover anyway as thats where I'm considering mounting a boost guage. I don't mind if it blocks the OD and Hi beam idiot lights.

Thanks,

If the steering wheel will turn, you can remove the screws holding the airbag without removing the steering wheel trim.
