Where is the overdrive relay? 200 1984

I am new to the 240. Where are the relays? The overdrive (manual transmission M46) won't engage. I assume that there is a light on the dash that indicates that you are in 5th gear. No light comes on when I press the button in 4th gear. Are the overdrive relays from a 740 and 240 interchangable - I have a working one from a 1986 740. Thank you.

If you have or can get the Bentley manual, it contains very good illustrations of all relay and ground locations.

it is behind the glovebox. take it out, take off the casing, and a very very common problem is that some of the solders have cracked. resolder them and it will work absolutely perfect. its worked on 3 of my 240s. dont know about interchangability sorry

Where is the overdrive relay? 200 1989

I've been having some odd problems with my 245 A/T and decided to pull the OD relay for inspection even though I can hear the relay activate when I push the lockout button on my shifter. My relay is different than the one I found pictures of from Don foster's posts on Jan 01. His is marked 004-038-01. Mine is 004-038-04. My circuit board looks totally different with many fewer solder points. I was wondering if anyone has knowledge of the same problems on the newer(mine) version of the relay. As far as visual indications, mine has one trace on the board that appears to have burned, or at least gotten hot and left a small burn mark on the inside of the plastic relay cover. The trace still appears to be intact though. I'm thinking of running a jumper wire in parallel with it to see if this fixes my problem.

One question: If I pull the relay, will my trans still shift into OD? In other words, does the relay provide anything for normal running condition, or is it strictly needed for the lockout switch activation?

I believe you will find the overdrive relay if you remove the glovebox and look just to the left of the opening you have created by removing the box. I know the one in our 82 is blue and measures about 1x1x3. Can't help you on the interchangability question.
