pre-'81 instrument cluster in '83 200

OK, I've got a nice cluster from the pre-'81 240 series and could use a replacement for the one in my '83 242. Can I do it? Besides the fit of the unit into the dash (which I know needs some help), is this just a plug-and-play? With the cluster out of the car, I hooked up the tach to the coil and got nuthin'. Thanks in advance . . .
